In a podcast interview, retired Navy SEAL Jocko Willink mentions two rules for anyone considering a career in the military.

You have to be willing to die (because in war, this is a very possible outcome for you).

You have to be willing to kill (and this is where it gets messy, he’s not just talking about killing the bad guy. No matter how hard you try to prevent it, it’s a near certainty that there will be innocent civilian casualties in the process).
 

War is an extreme example, but maybe these two rules can be used throughout most areas in life.

If your mission is to find love, do you not risk the chance of getting hurt?  Or hurting others in the process (even when you have the best intentions not to)?

If your mission is to find peace, is it not fair to assume some conflict will be on that path? 

We've been on tens of thousands of miles of roadtrips - the beauty we look back on isn't the absence of breaking down - it's who we become through those breakdowns. 

What “war” are you/should you be engaged in right now?

What "war" is worth the risk of hurting others (or yourself) in the process?

What's the risk if you avoid this war altogether? 

Are the battles you’re choosing to engage in bringing you closer to your best story/winning the war?

Which battles are not?

Nothing changes if nothing changes.
