In the book Stumbling On Happiness, researchers gave volunteers a color swatch to study. After staring at the color for 5 seconds, they took it away and asked one volunteer group (the "Describers") to describe the color they had for 30 seconds. They asked the other group (the "Non-Describers") to sit in silence for 30 seconds after seeing their color. All volunteers were then shown a lineup of six color swatches and asked to pick out their original swatch. 33% of the Describers accurately identified the original color. 73% of the Non-Describers identified the original color.
It appears the Describers' verbal description of their experience overwrote their memories of the actual experience. They ended up remembering not what they had experienced, but what they had said about what they experienced. So... How was your weekend? "Best one yet." See you out there. ❤️🏴 |
