SURELY if you've been here in the Go Fast records of philosophy and the way we see it section - you've heard of the myth of Sisyphus.
But since we get sign-ups to the letter of love by the day and some of ya'll are new here, and since we know many of us have made a career of bonking our heads - we'll cover it again. Just do us a favor and read the rest like the naked announcer guy from a Knight's Tale... (helps with memory)
Ahem;
The myth of Sisyphus! A man condemned to spend eternity pushing a boulder up a mountain, only to watch it roll back down each time he reached the top.
The perfect image of a meaningless life, is it not?
Our boy Albert Camus didn't think so.
He saw it a little differently.
Camus argued that the tragedy wasn't the work itself, but in believing the work needed some glorious ending to have meaning.
His essay closes with the famous line:
"One must imagine Sisyphus happy."
Not because his task didn't suck - it sucked. And at one point or another - yours will too.
Rather because the most rebellious act we can offer a life trying to break us down is to smile in the face of it's attempts. To choose joy in the middle of agony. To make our own meaning of the work instead of waiting for the world to make it for us.
If you're reading this right now - there is a rock in your life, and there is a hill in front of you. We encourage you today to realize that your rock is not your enemy - it's your dance partner.
What does it look like for you to choose joy in the pushing?
What does it look like to be present in the your life struggle?
What does it look like NOT TO escape it?
How can you, this week, smile in the face of the absurd challenges it is sure to bring you?
How can you be "Anti-Fragile"?
The work is never done, friends. Not in this life. And it's not a curse. It IS life.
